“ Plowden’s photographs explore the essential elements of the region. He records the vastness of the land and the sky; windrows of cut grass and bales of hay; rural dirt roads; bridges; isolated farmsteads; details of barns, churches, and post offices; small-town main streets; grain elevators; rail lines and station depots. He also shows us farmers, mechanics, and shop owners—the region’s dignified and resilient inhabitants. These images present a rich portrait of a way of life, a state of mind. Attentive, as always, to the overlapping evidence of past and present, Plowden’s pictures are affectionate, elegiac, and hopeful. By looking so intently at physical things, he points to something deeper: the emotional and perhaps even spiritual tenor of the place.”
